The 133 sq. mi. mountainous island of St. Vincent lies between St. Lucia and Grenada in the southern Caribbean. This windward island and its 32 sister islands and cays are scattered across the Caribbean like green emeralds on a turquoise sea. Eight of the Grenadines are inhabited including Mustique and Petit St. Vincent which are hideaways for the rich and famous, Bequia, Canouan, and Mayreau which are spectacular diving and snorkeling sites, and Union Island, the most southerly, which is a sailing gateway for the region.
The interior of St. Vincent offers many options to hikers and eco-tourists among which are a 3-hour trek to the La Soufriere volcano, the tallest peak on the island. There are also excursions to the rainforest as well as walking tours for birdwatchers hoping to sight the elusive St. Vincent parrot. The crystal blue waters surrounding St. Vincent and the Grenadines are perfect for diving, snorkeling, and fishing.
These islands are close together and encourage boating and sailing and have safe harbors with a good selection of reataurants, bars, and small inns. Live-aboard catamarans and yachts can be rented for a week or longer and allow visitors to stay aboard the boat and visit a different island every day. These boats come equipped with a captain and a chef so all that’s left for you to do is enjoy your activities and your surroundings.
Kingstown , the capital of St. Vincent, has a variety of restaurants ranging from fast food to gourmet. Shopping in Kingstown takes place at the Caribbean Market which offers handmade local crafts. Arrangements can be made here with excursion companies to take you into the interior of the island.
The Grenadines are famous for their white sand beaches, translucent blue waters, and lush scenery. Many scenes from “Pirates of the Caribbean” were filmed here because of the beautiful tropical scenery. Only small numbers of tourists ever see this part of the Caribbean which adds to its peace and tranquility. Plan your next vacation here and bring your camera and be prepared to take plenty of pictures.
